Vimeo, the long-standing video-hosting platform, has undergone significant layoffs just months after its acquisition by private equity firm Bending Spoons. According to reports, the job cuts have affected most of the company, with some employees stating that entire teams, including the video team, were eliminated.
In a statement shared on social media, Dave Brown, Vimeo’s former vice president of Global Brand & Creative, said, "Yesterday, following Vimeo’s recent acquisition by a private equity firm, I learned that I, along with a large portion of the company, was impacted by layoffs." The acquisition, which took place in the latter half of 2025, involved an all-cash deal valued at $1.38 billion.
Bending Spoons, known for its cost-cutting strategies post-acquisition, has conducted similar layoffs in the past. The private equity firm drastically reduced staff at Evernote in 2023 and WeTransfer in 2024 following its purchases of those companies. While the exact number of employees let go at Vimeo remains unconfirmed, the cuts have left many wondering about the platform's future viability, particularly given its reliance on video services.
When reached for comment, a Bending Spoons spokesperson confirmed the layoffs but did not provide further details, stating, "To respect the privacy of those departing, we cannot provide additional details at this time." The spokesperson added, "Going forward, Bending Spoons remains committed to growing Vimeo to meet the needs of its diverse user base."
However, former employees have expressed skepticism about the company’s direction. One ex-staffer commented on X, "It sucks to see something I built killed by private equity in a technology company skin suit."
Founded a year before YouTube, Vimeo has long positioned itself as a premium platform for creators and businesses to host videos. With its workforce now significantly reduced, the future of Vimeo and its ability to maintain its services remains uncertain.
For now, the full impact of these layoffs on the platform and its users is yet to be seen. Bending Spoons has yet to provide clarity on how Vimeo will operate with a minimal staff, particularly in the wake of its video team’s reported disbandment.
